Example use cases of Source-Connect I/O in Source-Connect Studio/Facility

  • Source-Connect Studio and Facility 4

There are four common use cases for using the Source-Connect I/O:

1. Recording your Talent

You might want to record your connection partner from Source-Connect into your DAW. In order to do so, do the following:

  1. Place Source-Connect I/O in your DAW so it is the last item in the path prior to your record.
  2. Select the plugin as your output in the Audio I/O settings in Source-Connect.
  3. For talkback, use any direct audio input of your choice in Source-Connect. Below is an example of an external microphone being used as the direct audio input in Source-Connect 4.

2. Sending a Mix

You can also configure Source-Connect and your DAW to send a live audio mix using the Source-Connect I/O:

  1. In your DAW, create a duplicate track that has your master track as its input.
  2. Place Source-Connect I/O as an insert on this channel.
  3. Create a talkback track and route it through your DAW and into this channel.
  4. Select Source-Connect I/O as your input in the Audio I/O Settings in Source-Connect.
  5. Select the output device of your choice so you can hear your connection partner.

3. Sending a processed microphone signal

You might want to use plugins or processing built into your DAW before sending your microphone signal to Source-Connect. For these cases:

  1. Place Source-Connect I/O as an insert in your DAW so it is the last plugin in the effects chain.
  2. Select Source-Connect I/O as your input in the Default Connection Options section of the Settings panel in Source-Connect.
  3. To hear your connection partner in Source-Connect, use any output device of your choice.

4. Sending and receiving through your DAW

In certain cases, you may wish to use Source-Connect I/O for both sending and receiving audio through your DAW. This may be the case in sessions where you frequently switch between recording and monitoring, or in a large session where the engineer may want all their I/O integrated in one mixer. There are two basic options to set up the plugin this way:

  • One Source-Connect I/O plugin for input and output.
  • One Source-Connect I/O plugin for input and a different instance of the Source-Connect I/O as an output.

One Source-Connect I/O plugin for input and output

In your DAW, place the Source-Connect I/O plugin as an insert on your track so it is the last plugin in the effects chain. For this first configuration mode (one plugin for both input and output), select the same Source-Connect I/O plugin in Source-Connect as an input and as an output. Please note that when using Source-Connect I/O to both send and receive audio, additional latency can cause an extra delay of up to 150ms depending on your DAW settings. Route everything to your own computer where possible.

 A Source-Connect I/O for input and a separate Source-Connect I/O for output

Some DAWs do not allow the routing flexibility for the convenience of an integrated send/receive plugin. In the case where separate Source-Connect I/O plugins are required, the user should combine the routing for both configuration methods in this example case.
