How to configure Cubase/Nuendo and Source-Connect 4 Studio/Facility to record incoming audio signal

  • Source-Connect Studio and Facility 4
  • How-To Articles

The following is a sample, step-by-step template that will ensure you can record incoming audio signal in Cubase/Nuendo and Restore/Replace in Source-Connect 4 Studio/Facility using the Source-Connect I/O plugin.

Your project, audio tracks, and configuration in general, might not be similar - keep in mind this is just a simple R/R template (100% tested though!).

There will be four separate setups you will need to take care of:

  • Creating a folder on your local machine for your session.
  • Following a set of steps in Cubase/Nuendo.
  • Following a set of steps in Source-Connect 4.
  • Recording on your DAW.

1. Create a folder for the Cubase/Nuendo session

On your computer, create a folder to save your session and the audio files in your session. Name it “Sample Cubase/Nuendo Session Files”.

2. Configure Cubase/Nuendo for recording

In Cubase/Nuendo, follow these steps:

a. Open up Cubase/Nuendo. In the window that is displayed, select the folder you created in step 1. Name your session “SampleSession”.

b. Click File > “Save As…”. Save the session as SampleSession.

c. Click Project > Add Track > Group.

d. Name the track “Bus Track” and click “Add Track”.

This will display the following track:

e. Go to Studio > MixConsole to bring up the mixer.

f. In the mixer, open up the “INSERTS” panel. Then, for the “Bus Track”, select Other > Source-Connect. Leave “THRU” muted.

g. Name the plugin “SCToCubasePlugin”.

h. Open up the “SENDS” panel. Then, for the “Bus Track”, select “Stereo Out”:

i. Open up the “ROUTING” panel. Then, for the “Bus Track”, select “No Bus” to remove the output.

j. Go to Project > Add Track > Audio.

k. Name the track “Recording”.

l. Open up the MixConsole.

m. For the “Recording” track, go to “ROUTING” and select “Bus Track” as the input. Leave “Stereo out” as the output.

n. Turn on input monitoring and record arm the “Recording” track.

3. Configure Source-Connect for your session

In Source-Connect 4, follow these steps:

a. Go to the Restore/Replace tab.

b. In the RECORDED FILES widget, click the R/R settings button.

c. In the WATCH FOLDER PATH window, click “Set Watch Folder”.

d. Go to the folder you created in step 1. Then, click into the session and choose the “Audio” folder.

e. Click the gears icon in the top right panel.

f. In the AUDIO I/O section, set CHANNELS to Mono.

g. In the AUDIO I/O section, select SCToCubasePlugin as your output.

h. In the Contacts panel, click your contact's icon and click the Connect button. Make sure both “Restore” and “Replace” are enabled.

4. Click “Record” in Cubase

In Cubase, click the “Transport Record” button at the bottom of the screen and start recording:

Then, go ahead and perform your session.

When you are ready to finish your session, click the “Stop” button to stop recording.

4. Wait for the recording to be displayed in Source-Connect 4

It might take some time for your recording to show up on Source-Connect 4 depending on the length of your session. For this sample session, we recommend a 1-minute recording.

And you are done! There will be a new recording in the “CONNECTIONS” panel with the name of your connection partner.
